Today is the Day After Yesterday

Hello,

This is a blog. I started it to share thoughts and ideas with people in a one way channel. It's not here to express myself (at least in a creative sense), I don't expect people to want to read my bad poetry or listen to me complain about the goings on in my social life. I just want to share what I've learned in my short time here with myself and others, and hopefully people will use this to return the favour.

You don't have to read this, but if you don't you will know less than you could of.

I'm going to start by talking about the New Year. 2010, or the big two-o-one-o as I like to call it in this particular sentence. I don't wish to argue that it's going to be the same as last year, that a year is just a year, that nothing will change for you this year, no more than it did the one before, or the one before. That's just not something anyone can predict. But today... Today, although it is not yesterday or tomorrow, is only special because you made it special. You're influenced of course by this whole New Year's resolution nonsense, although to call it nonsense may be unfair. Some people do use this day to their advantage, to decide to make drastic changes to their life, most do not, none should.

The Earth completing a rotation around the sun is a poor excuse to attempt to better yourself once every 365 days. Think of it this way: At the end of every year, the Earth will have completed a rotation of the sun, those of us who own calendars will flip a page and get out our permanent markers, we will get together with friends and family for one of many, many social get togethers that take place in a year, we will watch the gunpowder ignite in the sky and count down from 10. Which part of that to you sounds as though your contentment in life should depend on it?

Your New Year's resolution is a step backwards in developing yourself as a person. It prevents you from constantly striving to better yourself, it prevents you from working hard towards achievements that will bring you satisfaction with your life, and instead leaves you with a distant goal that you will set for yourself to reach at some point within the year on just one insignificant day of the year.

Resolve today, tomorrow and the day after.
